Selecting and Connecting your Micro-Coax Cable

1. Choosing the right cable
We use micro coax cables with I-PEX connectors by default. They can be used without active components or additional hardware.
2. Setting up the hardware
For prototyping, we have developed an I-PEX-to-MIPI-CSI-2 plug adapter. This enables connection of the micro-coax cables to VC MIPI® Cameras as well as to a flex cable socket for 22-pin ribbon cables on the processor board side.
3. Installing the drivers
Adapted basic drivers are already available for many boards. We support you with the adaptation for new processor boards.
Applications for CSI-2 Cameras and Micro-Coax Cables
Robots & Machines
Micro-Coax cables enable flexible integration of cameras even with remote sensor heads.
Embedded Devices
Flexible cables show their strengths in confined spaces.
Sensors & Measuring Devices
The camera and processing unit can be up to 100 cm apart – for maximum flexibility and the smallest possible sensor heads.
Internal Device Cabling
Flexible micro coax cables facilitate cabling inside devices, especially where space is limited.
Multi-Camera Systems
Micro coax cables enable flexible connections when multiple camera sensors are installed remotely, with a central processing unit.

Frequently Asked Questions About MIPI Cameras with Micro-Coax Cables
What is the maximum transmission speed for MIPI CSI-2 with micro coax cables?
What is the maximum transmission speed for MIPI CSI-2 with micro coax cables?
The maximum transmission speed between MIPI CSI-2 cameras and processor boards with micro coax cables depends on the number of data lanes and the processing speed of the embedded processor. Vision Components uses twisted and shielded cables with up to 30 strands, allowing for the transmission of four full lanes. With a processing speed of 1.5 Gbit/s per lane achievable by most processors, transmission rates of 6 Gbit/s are possible. With an 8-bit pixel resolution, this corresponds to 750 MB per second.
What are the technical characteristics of micro-coax cables for VC MIPI Cameras?
What are the technical characteristics of micro-coax cables for VC MIPI Cameras?
The micro-coax cables consist of twisted and shielded strands with I-PEX connectors. They can be supplied in custom lengths up to 100 cm.
What advantages do micro-coax cables offer over FPC cables for MIPI cameras?
What advantages do micro-coax cables offer over FPC cables for MIPI cameras?
The maximum cable length with micro-coax cables is up to 100 cm for the connection between the camera and the processor board. With FPC (flexible printed circuit) cables, the maximum length is technically limited to 20 cm. Micro-coax cables are also very flexible and allow smaller bending radii.
How can I use VC MIPI Cameras with micro-coax cables in volume production?
How can I use VC MIPI Cameras with micro-coax cables in volume production?
For prototypes and functional samples, VC offers specially developed adapters that enable the connection of micro-coax cables with I-PEX connectors to cameras and processor boards. In volume production, the adapter can be integrated directly into the design or an alternative connector can be used.
