Vision Components and QDI Systems announce partnership: MIPI Cameras enable new SWIR applications for smart farming, industry and drones

  • VC MIPI SWIR-Cameras with QDI’s Quantum Dot Technology will be available from Q4, 2026
  • Quantum Dots lower the barrier to entry for SWIR imaging, enabling new applications in industry, agriculture, security, etc.
  • First demo of sensor capabilities at Vision trade fair (Messe Stuttgart, 6-8 October)

Vision Components and QDI Systems partner to integrate QDI’s Quantum Dot technology for SWIR imaging into VC MIPI Camera Modules.

Vision Components and QDI Systems have partnered to develop VC MIPI Camera Modules with QDI’s Quantum Dot image sensors. They enable cost-efficient integration of Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging, opening up new use cases in markets such as industry, agriculture and security. The first VC MIPI CSI-2 Camera with QDI 6410 SWIR image sensor offers a VGA resolution of 640 x 512 pixel (0.3 megapixel) and a spectral range from 350-1850 nm. It will be available for evaluation and prototyping shortly after the Vision trade fair (Messe Stuttgart, 6-8 October), where a demo of the image sensor’s capabilities will be on display. Further camera modules with SXGA and Full-HD resolution are already in development.

Opening SWIR to new use cases

SWIR imaging can be used in numerous use cases from plant health monitoring and water shortage mapping in smart farming projects, to material sorting in the recycling industry, to inspection and measurement tasks. With its vision enhancement features such as seeing through fog, smoke or haze, it can also be used in various drone applications, e.g. wildfire detection and search and rescue. QDI Systems’s Quantum Dot technology makes SWIR imaging economically viable for applications, where it previously was not, due to the many times higher price point of common InGaAs sensors. The QDI image sensors with Quantum Dot technology can be fabricated on standard Si ROIC wafers with easier scalability and higher yield. The image sensors are designed and manufactured in Europe with no reliance on critical raw materials.

Industrial-grade SWIR MIPI Cameras

Vision Components integrates the QDI image sensors QDI 6410 (VGA), QDI 12810 (SXGA) and QDI 19205 (Full-HD) into an industrial-grade MIPI CSI-2 camera module with long-term availability. With their wide spectral range of 350-1850 nm and spectral tunability, the cameras can be flexibly integrated into embedded vision projects and smart devices. The VC MIPI Modules are developed and manufactured in Germany and will be available with drivers in source code for all common processor boards. Through the extensive VC MIPI Bricks system of accessories, the camera modules can also be ordered with various cable options, lens holders and optics, ready to deploy.

Juul Gielens, Chief Business Officer at QDI Systems, says:

“Vision Component’s MIPI cameras are easy to integrate and supported by common processor platforms. With their industrial-grade quality they are a perfect fit for our Quantum Dot SWIR image sensors. We’re looking forward to seeing the cameras implemented in many projects and applications.”

Jan-Erik Schmitt, Vice President of Sales at Vision Components, adds:

“SWIR imaging adds another layer of information and can be beneficial for many use cases. With QDI’s Quantum Dot technology and our VC MIPI Cameras, we can enable cost-efficient integration of SWIR imaging, bringing the technology to new applications and markets. We’re happy to have QDI on our side as a dynamic and reliable partner and look forward to supporting QDI and their customers with our cameras and integration services.”
