How to Connect a GMSL2 Camera to a Processor Board?
Choose cable
Set up the hardware
Install drivers
1. Choosing the right cable
We offer coaxial cables / shielded twisted pair cables with MMCX connectors and Fakra adapters. The serializer required for serial data transmission is integrated into the cameras.
2. Setting up the hardware
GMSL2 cameras are usually connected to the serial interface of a processor board. For prototypes and small volume productions, we have developed a deserializer adapter that allows VC GMSL2 Cameras to be connected to most common processor boards via the widely used MIPI CSI-2 interface using a standard FPC cable.
3. Installing the drivers
Adapted basic drivers are already available for many boards. We support you with the adaptation for new processor boards.
Applications for GMSL2 Cameras
GMSL2 (Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link 2) was developed specifically for high-bandwidth data transmission over long distances of up to 10 meters. This makes the technology ideal for industrial image processing.

Frequently Asked Questions about GMSL2 Cameras
How does data transmission work with GMSL2 cameras?
How does data transmission work with GMSL2 cameras?
GMSL2 transmits serial data via coaxial shielded twisted pair cables (STP cables) between a camera module and a processing unit. To do this, the parallel image data from the camera is converted into serial data using a SerDes adapter and then transmitted. On the processor board, the data is either received via a serial interface or converted back into parallel data using a deserializer. Serial data transmission is used because this technology allows data with high bandwidth to be transmitted quickly, reliably, and over long distances of up to 10 meters.
What are the advantages of VC MIPI Cameras with GMSL2 option?
What are the advantages of VC MIPI Cameras with GMSL2 option?
The micro-coax cables consist of twisted and shielded strands with I-PEX connectors. They can be supplied in custom lengths up to 100 cm.
How can prototypes be built with GMSL2 cameras?
How can prototypes be built with GMSL2 cameras?
The maximum cable length with micro-coax cables is up to 100 cm for the connection between the camera and the processor board. With FPC (flexible printed circuit) cables, the maximum length is technically limited to 20 cm. Micro-coax cables are also very flexible and allow smaller bending radii.
Are VC GMSL2 Cameras suitable for industrial series production?
Are VC GMSL2 Cameras suitable for industrial series production?
For prototypes and functional samples, VC offers specially developed adapters that enable the connection of micro-coax cables with I-PEX connectors to cameras and processor boards. In volume production, the adapter can be integrated directly into the design or an alternative connector can be used.
